Problem

SoundCloud users lack a seamless way to discover, attend, and rewatch live-streamed performances. Artists also struggle to monetize and engage with their audience in real-time on the platform.

Objective

To design a live-streaming feature that allows users to attend virtual concerts, interact with artists, and support them directly, all within the SoundCloud ecosystem.

Solution

Introducing SoundCloud Live! A feature that enhances the music streaming experience by enabling users to discover live events, RSVP for reminders, engage with artists through real-time chat and tipping, and rewatch past performances—all within the SoundCloud platform.

Research Background

Research Goal

To understand the behaviors, needs, and challenges that SoundCloud users face when discovering, attending, and re-watching live-streamed events.

Research Methods

Secondary Research

Analyzed existing live-streaming platforms (e.g., YouTube Live, Instagram Live, Twitch) to identify industry standards, monetization models, and engagement strategies. Researched how SoundCloud users currently discover and attend live music events.

User Interviews

Conducted in-depth interviews with patients to gain firsthand insights into their experiences, challenges, and expectations when engaging in bartering practices.

  • Participants: 5 individuals (1 woman, 4 men)
  • Age Range: 28 to 35 years old

Information Architecture

Sitemap

I created a sitemap based on results of the open card sort to establish the information architecture, ensuring a logical and intuitive structure for the platform that allows users to easily navigate and access key features.

Interaction Design

User Flows

The user flows illustrate how users navigate the SoundCloud live-streaming feature, covering key interactions for discovering, saving, and watching live-stream events. By mapping out these flows, I ensured an intuitive experience that allows users to seamlessly engage with live content.

Low-fidelity Wireframes

I created low-fidelity wireframes to outline the basic layout and structure, allowing me to quickly visualize and refine the overall design before moving into more detailed iterations.

Low-fidelity Usability Testing

  • Participants: 5 individuals (1 woman, 4 men)
  • Age Range: 28 to 35 years old
  • Methodology: Conducted usability testing with the low-fidelity prototype to evaluate the ease of use, functionality, and overall user experience of key features.
  • Goal: To identify usability issues, gather feedback, and suggest improvements based on user interactions with the platform.

Tasks to be completed

  • Watch a live-stream marked as "Watch Later"
  • Watch a live-stream that is currently “Happening Now”
  • Add an upcoming livestream to “Your Schedule”

Insights

  • Some users felt the "Watch Later" section was buried under too many clicks
  • The "Past" (streams) section label caused confusion for some users
  • Most users expected the "Watch Later" feature to be easier to access
  • Most users felt finding live-streams currently happening was straightforward
  • Adding an upcoming live-stream to “Your Schedule” was easy for all users
  • Users felt the icon for adding events was clear and intuitive

Next steps

  • Streamline navigation to make "Watch Later" easier to find
  • Rename "Past" section to reduce confusion
  • Conduct further usability testing for improved intuitiveness

  • Methodology: Conducted usability testing with the high-fidelity prototype to assess the visual design, interaction flow, and overall user experience of key features.
  • Goal: To validate design decisions, refine functionality, and gather user feedback to enhance clarity, efficiency, and engagement before final implementation.

Tasks to be completed

  • Add a live-stream from last week to your “Watch later” list
  • Sync “Your event schedule” to your phone calendar
  • Watch the live-stream you marked as “Watch Later” in the first task

Insights

  • Some participants felt the "From Your Line-Up" section looked visually inconsistent
  • The "Watch Later" option was too nested according to some participants
  • Participants expected a pop-up confirmation after adding events to "Watch Later" or syncing their schedule
  • The sync calendar button was too small and unclear for most participants
  • One participant expected the sync to calendar feature to also be in the settings page
  • Some participants had to backtrack to find features like the calendar and saved events

Next steps

  • Redesign the "From Your Line-Up" section to match the visual style of other elements
  • Add a pop-up menu on event thumbnails for quick actions like "Watch Later"
  • Implement confirmation messages for key actions to provide visual feedback
  • Increase visibility of the calendar and sync button to be more prominent
  • Add the sync feature to the settings page to align with user expectations

Iterations

Priority Revisions

I iterated on the design based on feedback from usability testing, addressing issues like improving navigation, clarifying button labels, and enhancing the appointment management process for a smoother user experience.

Testing revealed difficulty in performing quick actions on event thumbnails. A quick-action menu was added to allow users to mark events as "Watch Later" without leaving the page.
Testing showed inconsistencies in page titles. The extraneous title on the “Your Line-Up” page was removed to create a more uniform experience.
Testing identified a lack of visual consistency in confirmation messages. Pop-ups were updated to align with SoundCloud’s existing design system.
Testing revealed that users expected event syncing in the settings page. A “Your Line-Up” section was added to provide easy access for calendar syncing.

Final Design

After implementing priority revisions based on usability testing feedback, I finalized the design, ensuring a seamless user experience, improved functionality, and a visually cohesive interface.
